The School of Design responded to an invitation from Croatian Post to help raise awareness of this alarming issue, one of the most urgent and significant global challenges, successfully communicating the message within the micro-format of a 35.5 × 42.6 mm postage stamp.
The collaborative project between the School of Design and Croatian Post, addressing the theme Plastic Waste in the Sea as part of the Combating Climate Change thematic postage stamp series, was developed as part of the Visual Communications Design 3 course during the second year of the undergraduate programme in Design, Visual Communications.
Over the course of slightly more than a month, students worked together with their mentors to develop and refine their designs for a commemorative postage stamp. They explored different interpretations of the impact of plastic waste on marine flora and fauna, as well as its consequences for human health, economic losses, and climate change.
The youngest generation of designers engaged critically with pressing global issues, the challenges of the green transition, and the need to shape their environment towards a climate-neutral and sustainable future. The communicative value of the project lies in the specific constraints of its format. The result was 26 original postage stamp proposals.
